Senior-Family Combo Shoot | Horton Portrait Photographer

I photographed Max, a 2013 Hanover-Horton senior, and his sweet family back in August.   Seems like the majority of my senior shoots this year were senior/family combo sessions, which is what Max’s mom opted for.  Adding a family shoot to a senior session is perfect for a few reasons.

  • Family portraits should be taken at least every 3 years.  Most families don’t even come close to hitting this guideline, so by addressing your need the day of your senior’s session, you’re killing two birds with one stone.
  • This is true, especially if you have a young man… getting him ready for pictures once as opposed to two separate dates is a huge bonus.
  • Your senior is very relaxed in front of the camera by the time we start shooting the family shots; they end up giving me the best expressions!
  • Lastly, it’s probably the last time it’ll be relatively ‘easy’ (haha) to round up your family, since in a few months your senior will likely be off to school.

Oh, and p.s., it’s official… Max is a future MSU Spartan!!  Go Green!!

Just a reminder!  **10 comments posted to this blog post and this family gets a 5×7 on me;  20 comments and I’ll upgrade ‘em to an 8×10!**  Comments may not post right away…but they will eventually.

After Max, I moved on to his older sister, Tara.  Tara, you are completely lovely.

With Tara and Max fully warmed up, we tackled some fun family shots.  The portrait session was held on the family’s stunning property with their home nestled adjacent a huge beautiful pond, with the surrounding land being equally lovely.  Max’s mom and I joked, as I posed Max on a pile of rocks near the waters edge, how it looked like this was a staged backdrop, it was that perfect.

I was super excited to design some wall groupings for this family.  Laura, Max’s mom, jumped on-board right away – it was awesome to have a client send me ideas & inspiration to work with.  In the end we came up with something absolutely perfect.  Here is the progression, with explanation.  During the consultation with Laura (and Max) I snapped a few shots of several of her walls.  I normally do consults in my home studio, but I knew I was going to be in the area that day.  Here’s the main wall we ended up designing for:

During their Viewing & Ordering appointment I used special software to digitally display various Wall Grouping options for Laura to see.  It was seconds to swap one image for another, or to bump an image size up or down so Laura could see the possibilities.  She loved the Wall Grouping shown below best and ordered Gallery Wrapped Canvases of each.  ALL of the images below are TRUE-TO-SCALE, meaning, Laura saw *exactly* what she was getting, and how it looked, and that it fit perfectly on that wall *before* she ever spent a dime!

Laura was kind enough to send me a snapshot of the finished wall, once her hubbie had the gallery wraps hung.  Thank you Laura!
